Keenan tries baseball

LOL! So, I went to Keenan's high school varsity baseball game today. He's been playing all of two weeks, never played the game before (just as was the case with football). He had a single, double, and triple in succession early in the game, and a bunch of RBI's and trips across the plate.

They put him in left field on "D" today. I watched him pull off a double play, catching a short outfield fly on the hard run and then firing a shot to 3rd base, catching the runner trying unsuccessfully to get back to 3rd after starting home.

He's got his sunflower seed chewing and spitting down pat, though he pulled up as I tried to catch that.

What an amazing young man!

MARCH 24th UPDATE

A few more shots from today's game. Keenan thought he'd try out playing catcher.

He had a relatively slow day at the office, batting-wise; a single, a triple, flied out, and made it first on a fielding error on a grounder he hit. Here's a news item in our local paper from the other day:
Henderson International 19, Mountain View 7 — At Mountain View, Keenan Gladd-Brown went 3-for-3 with a home run, a triple and four RBIs to help the Wolverines down the Saints for fifth place in the Spring Slam.

Keenan's football exploits

Keenan has been playing football for all of seven weeks now. His team, Henderson International, where he is a freshman, is now 5-0 on the season. They won yesterday 44-0 against Laughlin, Keenan scoring one TD and one 2-point conversion. He left the game mid-3rd Qtr with a groin pull. Scary, 'cause he has a big USTA Sectional tennis tournament coming up in 3 weeks.

Keenan has 9 TDs thus far, missing a 10th by one yard last week after about a 45 yd run with 1:31 left in the game. Below, Keebo scoring his 7th TD last week, World-renowned sports and entertainment photographer Tom Donoghue shot that and the four below it, and sent us about two dozen game photos -- free.

Thank you, Tom, very nice of you. I stowed all of Tom's shots here.

Above and below, at the game yesterday. I'n no Tom Donoghue, but I can shoot...

Above, one of the coaches working on Keenan after he pulled up with the injury. I told Michelle and Danielle sending these injury shots would be one way to get Grandmother home from California.

;)

Yeah, I'm bummin'.

Below, Keenan's 2nd TD of the year, during their first game.

BTW, Roll Tide! My Vols are in the basement this year.

Old Family Recipes for Tea Cakes

Below is the Burgess recipe for Tea Cakes that Marguerite uses and which Aunt Bessie used.

Burgess Family Southern Teacakes

3 eggs
2 cups sugar
3 Tablespoons buttermilk
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon vanilla flavoring
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 cups plain flour
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup butter (1 stick)

Melt shortening and butter together. Thoroughly mix all other ingredients with melted butter and shortening.
Scoop small spoons full of batter onto cookie sheet. Bake at 400 degrees for about 10-12 minutes.

And then here's another one from the Grisham side of the family that Aunt Inez gave me. She got it from her mother, Grandma Laura Grisham.

Grandma Laura Grisham’s Tea Cakes

1 egg
1 cup sugar
½ teaspoon nutmeg
¼ teaspoon salt
1/3 teaspoon soda
1/3 cup buttermilk
1/3 cup oil
21/3 cups plain flour

Mix all ingredients, roll out dough, and cut into 2½ inch cookies. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes.

Enjoy!

New Year

Let's try this again!!!

It's been a while since we started this blog but earlier this month some of us were regretting that we had not done more with it to share information and photos - so here we go again.

I'm posting some family photos that I thought some of you might like a copy of.  You can only post five at a time so there will be installments.

Chime in, post some of yours, etc.

Love you all,
Cheryl

This is one of the most recent portraits I know of of Mom and Dad.

This photo was taken while visiting Aunt Inez Jan. 2, 2008. She turned 95 in December.

This is a photo of me and Mom at Cracker Barrel on Dec. 31, 2007.
